Boaring Ant

Tanikawa House

Veig’s first project was a garden at a villa initially acquired and used by Masamichi Toyama. The residence was designed by architect Kazuo Shinohara, who was entrusted with a single poem by Shuntaro Tanikawa, the poet to inspire the design. The place is located near Mount Asama, this area is known for its cold climate and soil composed of volcanic materials.  The neighboring forest is in an early stage of succession, primarily consisting of red pines and beeches, with an undergrowth densely populated by Euonymus oxyphyllus (Tsuribana) and Lonicera gracilipes (Uguisu-Kagura).  In this project, we emphasized humans’ experience as members of the ecosystem, finding their place, establishing spatial senses, and forming relationships with other organisms, just as birds build nests with branches and wild boars dig up the soil.
